WALES

At Nefyn have a quick pint at the local on the 16th as the members did over 100 years ago.

Wales can traced its golfing roots back to the 1880s as its coastline was perfect for the creation of exceptional links courses with Tenby generally accepted as its oldest course. Home to over 200 courses the likes of Royal St Davids and Royal Portcawl are a pleasure to play while Nefyn is one of the lesser known golfing treasures in the British Isles. Celtic Manor hosted the Ryder Cup in 2010, which heightened the profile of golf in Wales. You are never far from a mountain or the sea in Wales so you won’t be disappointed as the country is blessed with some wonderful scenery.

Caernarfon Castle is one of the top places visitors say they most hope to see.

Known as the land of castles with 641 famous fortresses the country is rich with historical sights and traditional villages. Time to explore this wonderful Celtic country and discover its golfing treasures for yourself.

      GOLF COURSES

PYLE & KENFIG: While the more famous Porthcawl lacks signature links dunes, Pyle & Kenfig offers an abundance of them, yet is still open to the weather elements. Founded in 1922, the classic links layout is a regular site for the Welsh Amateur.

ASHBURNHAM: One of the finest and oldest courses in Wales, Ashburnham was founded in 1894. With great views over Carmarthen Bay, this classic out and back links course rolls through the dunes testing all golfers that come and enjoy a great challenge.

PENNARD: Golf has been played here since 1896 although the course you see today owes most of it’s appeal to James Braid. The course is routed over classic undulating and tumbling link terrain pocked with dunes large and small. The course is located 200 feet above the shoreline so no wonder Pennard is often called “the links in the sky”.

TENBY: From first hole to last, this great links will remind you of how wonderful its layout is. With stunning ocean views the course maximizes the natural features of its beauty as golfers have been coming to this course since the late 1880s.

Tenby’s undulating fairways have been ‘over 120 years in the making’.

SOUTHERNDOWN: Established in 1905 the course hosts one of the most prestigious Welsh amateur tournaments every year. With narrow gorse, bracken lined fairways and deep bunkers, Southerndown is a very challenging links. The closing holes will live long in the memory of its guests.

ROYAL PORTHCAWL: Arguably the finest course in Wales. While the course does not possess the towering dunes of some links course, this characteristic makes for a more demanding layout by allowing the weather to be a major factor. It does not hurt the view either, as the sea is visible from every hole. Royal Porthcawl finally received its proper recognition when it was honored as the host of the 1995 Walker Cup Matches.

CELTIC MANOR: The new course built for staging the 2010 Ryder Cup in 2010 opened up for play in 2007. A testing parkland course that has spectacular views over the valleys. The course will test you from the first shot to the last, which all adds up to a challenging but exciting round of golf.

ABERDOVEY: Bernard Darwin, the great golf writer, was completely captivated by this classic links course located at the end of a peninsula on the west coast of Wales. A must play for lovers of links golf.

ROYAL ST. DAVID’S (HARLECH): Sometimes referred to as Harlech, this exemplary links course is included on the list of the world’s great golf courses. Harlech, with the 13th century castle of the same name towering over it, has a setting that is nothing short of spectacular.

NEFYN & DISTRICT: Nefyn is one of the lesser-known golfing treasures in the British Isles. Ian Woosnam ranks the cliff top course in North Wales among his favorites.
