      GOLF COURSES

ROYAL LYTHAM & ST. ANNES: The scene of nine British Open Championships and site for the 2001 event in which David Duval triumphed. Tom Lehman also won his first major here in 1996. Local Tip: Visitor play only available on Monday and Thursday.

ROYAL BIRKDALE: In 1998 Mark O’Meara captured the ‘Claret Jug’ for his second major title of the year here. Royal Birkdale, a regular venue of the British Open Championship, is considered to be one of the finest courses in the world. The classic links layout has fairways that snake through massive dunes providing an ultimate test of golf. Local Tip: A letter of introduction from your home club will be required for play. Limited play on Wednesday and Thursday.

FORMBY: An unusual links course in that Formby does not have any direct views of the sea. Instead, the fairways roll through dunesland covered in parts with pine trees. It is a venue for past British Amateurs and other major events.

ROYAL LIVERPOOL: Founded in 1869, Hoylake, as the locals call it, has hosted ten Open Championships. The Open was last played on this highly rated links course in 1967 and again in 2006.

SOUTHPORT & AINSDALE: In addition to being a regular site for Open Qualifying, S&A, as the locals refer to the club, has the distinction of having hosted two Ryder Cup Matches over the years. It is a pure seaside links course.

HILLSIDE: Hillside Golf Club is situated in Southport, the home of “Englands Golf Coast”. The course forms part of England’s finest stretch of coastal links being adjacent to Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale with Formby Golf Club a few miles down the road. A round of golf at Hillside is a truly memorable experience and many visitors consider the course equal to anything the Open Championship venues have to offer.

WEST LANCASHIRE: While it may not have hosted many of the prestigious tournaments of it’s more famous neighbors, West Lancashire is a formidable test of links golf with high dunes and large pot bunkers. Site of British Open qualifying.

West Lancashire was founded in 1873 and is among the ten oldest golf clubs in England.

PGA NATIONAL (THE BELFRY): A great addition to the Belfry when it opened in 1997 and it features some great manicured greens with undulating fairways amidst a great setting. With cunning placed bunkers and a number of water hazards, the PGA National will provide a very enjoyable stern test to your game.

BRABAZON (THE BELFRY): This course has captured the attention of the golfing world on several occasions over the years and is the adopted home to the Ryder Cup. Christy O’ Connor’s 2 iron approach to the 18th green or Sam Torrance’s winning putt all conjure up images that has allowed this course’s legend to grow. The original course was designed by Dave Thomas and will test all comers from tee to green.

STOKE POGES (STOKE PARK CLUB): Recognized as one of the finest parkland courses in England, Stoke Poges has a rich history. Designed in 1908 by Harry Colt around the beautiful mansion, it has attracted attention from the golfing world ever since. With some testing par fours and some alterations over the years to the bunkers & greens, Stoke Poges is truly a championship layout.

WALTON HEATH: One of England’s best heathland courses, Walton Heath has tested golfers since it opened in 1908. With classic heathland qualities, the course is protected by tremendous bunkering, gorse and occasional strong winds. Hosted the Ryder Cup in 1981 and ranked consistently in the top 30 courses in Britain every year.

Walton Heath has something special to offer, an expertly crafted heathland beauty with crisp turf giving it a links feel.

PRINCES: In 1932 Prince’s hosted it’s one and only British Open Championship. The course, like many in Britain, was used as target practice during WW II. However, in 1950 the layout was re-worked and it is considered to be a more superior layout than that which Gene Sarazen triumphed over in winning his Open title here

ROYAL ST. GEORGES: One of three southeast courses to have hosted the Open Championship, Royal St George’s is now the only Open venue south of England’s Lancashire Coast. Greg Norman won the title the last time the Open was played at Royal St. George’s. All told, the Open has been played eleven times on this classic links layout dating back to 1894.
